Devotions for Living: What Is That To You?

What Is That To You?

“Jesus saith unto him,
‘If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?”
Follow thou Me.”

- John 21:22 -

Jesus is speaking to Peter here. He has just told Peter of how his life would end. Immediately upon hearing this, Peter begins to inquire about another, namely John. Perhaps he wanted to know if others were appointed a martyr’s death as well.

Jesus offers hard words to Peter. He makes no apology. He has given Peter what looks like a painful, sad future when in reality, it was a great gift. No other follower of Jesus Christ was bolder, more courageous, or more human than Peter.

Often when we face a hard road, we will look around us and wonder why others are not facing the same. Jesus pulls us back with these words “What is that to thee?”

It is as if He takes our chin in His hand, turns our head so that we are face to face and He gently refocuses our thoughts to where they should be ‘…follow thou Me.

When we become ‘refocused’, it matters not what anyone else has or has not, does or does not, or is or is not. When we focus our eyes on following Jesus, the world and its prideful ways slowly fade away.
